What is Hash Tag? A tag is a term assigned to a piece of an idea or information. This kind of metadata helps describe a thing and allows it to be found again by browsing or searching. Tags are generally chosen informally and personally by its creator. The viewer also can choose the Tag depending on the system.

The Hashtag is one of the metadata tags that is prefaced by the hash symbol, #. In 2007, Chris Messina proposed the use of Hashtag first time in a tweet.

Hashtags are widely used on Twitter as a form of user-generated tagging that enables cross-referencing of content sharing a subject or theme. For example, a search within Twitter for the Hashtag #orexis returns all posts that have been tagged with that Hashtag. After the initial hash symbol, a Hashtag may include letters, digits, and underscores.

At the end of the decade, Hashtags were entrenched in the culture of the platform, and they soon emerged across the social media platforms, microblogging and photo-sharing services such as Instagram, Facebook, and even YouTube.

How to Hashtag?

A Hashtag can be a single word, an abbreviation, an invented combination of letters and numbers, or a phrase, simply a piece of information. If it is a phrase, there can be no spaces between words. In a Hashtag all letters and numbers must run together without spaces. No punctuation or symbols in your Hashtag except symbol #. I.e. starts with a Hashtag symbol # and follow it directly with the letters. Numbers are OK, but have at least one letter with the numbers, Hashtags cannot consist entirely of numbers.

These days, Hashtag or this symbol “#” as it is more commonly known, has become an integral part of social media. More than 50 percentage of social media posts are presented with Hashtag. Business marketers have also cracked the code and figured out inventive ways to use Hashtags. And ultimately, ‘Hashtag’ was added to the Oxford English Dictionary too.
